i have a 110g and im wondering if an emporer 400 and an xp3 would be enough filtration or can i go with two 400's without the xp3?

It depends on what your going to keep in it My. 110gal all I keep is one 12inch managuense I run two aqua clears 500 and a sand filter it does the job. I would run two emperor 400's

i really havent got to the fish selection but i imagine the various available fish from petsmart lol at least for now...Something i noticed while reading the xp3 box under flow rate its 350 u.s. gph then a few rows down its says "waterflow with filtration media and accesories 187 u.s. gph" seems like misrepresentation to me.Tthe emporer of course says 400 gph certified accurate! i wonder

It definately depends on what fish / how many fish are kept for your filtration. It also depends on if plants are kept.

Look at how many times and hour your water is filtered. If you have a lot of fish, you want high hourly filtration, if you have plants, you need less.

I love Rena filters (I have the xp2's). Easy to maintain and work with. The first flow rate is without any media - an overglorified power head. The second number is with all the media trays filled with appropriate media (carbon, sponges etc). I do not know how Marineland represents their flow - with or without media.

Another thing to look at is aesthetics. I like canisters because most of the filter is hidden below the tank. So I would get two Xp3's. But that is for aesthics only and it would be planted - so I would want least amount of surface agitation.

Good luck

IMO, I like to keep filters, plants, and fish all separate. You only should be stocking enough for your tank, not for the tank and filter. Plants help the filter with ammonia, but still should be included in the total equation. GPH, you want your tank to "cycle" threw the filter at least 5 times. So get a filter or two that will do this.
