New Tank ! Fish combinations question

my 2 cents.
1.gouramis are okay to cycle with.two males of almost any fish that will grow over two inches will not work out in the long runalmost every type of animal or fish have an alpha male complex going.however in nature they are not confined to 4 walls.in a fish store you will see lot more fighting in a tank with 2 or3 fish than in a tank loaded with fish.1 or 4 or more.it is very common for new fish to go up and down the sides of the tank for the first two or three days.
2.i like those plants.they can very very decorative.can be planted even as singles.high matenence they can double in size every week ..like to eat nitrites
3.test kits are very common.may cost you 20-30 bucks but may keep you pet fish alive for 4 years or more.no idea what kind of fish store you are dealing with.
4.in a 16g it is recommended 16 inches worth of fish.not only do they need some space they poop and pee and by the end of week the water quality will be such that it may effect their ability to breathe. you already have 4,5 inches when those two grow.myself, neon types i would allow 2 inces per gallon.even with extremely good water care not a chance you want to go over 24 inches worth of fish.
get a clear cut plan on what type of community you going to have.a school of neons are amazing.sounds like your are cycling with chemicals.either way you need to understand what`s going on with your water chemistry first.proper testing and overall knowledge.next i would plan what kinda algae eater to get.this eater will need a different diet than the rest of the fish.

Oh dear lord! PLEASE PLEASE disregard the post from yourchoice!!!
There is so much incorrect info I won't even bother to address it line by line.

budrecki? info is all accurate however maybe i did not communicate it very well.i`m open minded to be educated..i don`t get.email if you like.

sorry to add to your woes, but the plant you got looks like Cabomba. it's not truly a low-maintenance plant in that it requries high light. Otherwise it starts to rot and the little leaves fall out everywhere. I'm having problems with mine and I have a plant-geared tank (light, ferts, liquid carbon). In my experience, anything with tiny needle-like leaves is high maintenace. I would suggest some nice Anachris. it's cheap, hardy, and a great oxygenator (grows very fast with little need for anything).

aquarium pharmaceuticals master test kit is the best test kit you could ever hope to get, and the only one this almost-expert uses. try going to www.drsfostersmith.com, www.petco.com, or www.petsmart.com. and i'm sure any pesmart or petco will have one.

i thought it was a water milfoil-christmas tree plant.(i could be wrong)i like to keep the stems straight in an orderly fashion. you can clean up the little peices of plant debrie with a fishnet.as long as the plant is green and looks heathy it can only help.decaying plants will hurt your water quality so you prune off the decay or yank the plant out.

alright guys, I just tested my water using pro water testing products.

Result:
- Ammona: 0.4-0.5 mg/l
- Nitrite: 0
- Nitrate: 0

My aquarium has been cycling for 2 weeks. Is this good? should I continue changing water frequently?

Anything over .25 ammonia is harmful, so yes. Keep doing daily water changes. I dont consider your first week "cycling" as you added no ammonia to the tank to start the cycle. Look like you are in the beginning of your cycle. Plan to do water changes everyday for probably the next month or so. You should end up with 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, and less than 20ppm Nitrates. When this happens you are fully cycled. Please introduce any new fish slowly, and only 2-3 at a time. Any more and you are going to mini-cycle probably. Anyway, good luck. Ive got 3 tanks cycling right now and I'm on about week 3 with my first 10 gallon witch is just about done cycling.
