Well, you asked what we thought about your picks for the 16 gal tank at the start of the post. So far, you have bought to dwarf Gs', not on the list.
Start building around those staying away from the RTBS, puffers and plecos. You can have a "fun" tank without the others, especially with some groups in there.
I agree that you shouldn't expect the "perfect community", but there is no point in setting up a war zone.

Check for compatibility WITH your gouramis and WITHIN your tank size. Do not get a fish just because it looks cool or on a whim, research what you want and figure out how it will do in your tank. None of us is trying to take the "fun" out of it, but the fish you are suggesting are just not possible in your tank. You will probably end up like the rest of us, with multiple tank syndrome..heehee. I started out with one tank, now I have 4 and im getting at least 2-3 more FW tank, then next year im doing a SW tank. Its a learning process, but dont get any fish intending to just "let them duke it out." Good luck.
