hey so, my girlfriend and i are planning on setting up a freshwater tank, we're getting a 35 gallon (breeding tank, i believe) from a friend of my family.
i have a few questions

we're thinking about putting a couple angels, some tetras, and some mollies in. but i want to know what needs to be done to prepare for this and to care for them.(we wanted the tetras to start cycling, is that a good idea? will they nip at the angels?)

also, is this a good idea? what other fish could be put in(or should we not put some in)

what kind of filter, pump, equipment do we need?
and what all do we need to start this?

any help on this would be amazing

Cycling your tank with fish required you to closely monitor water levels and do possible daily water changes.

you can also cycle the tank without fish... you can add small ammounts of ammonia to get the bacteria going. There is a good guide on this stickied in the nooby forum.

your stocklist sounds ok.. but you need to figure out which kind of tetra you want.. there is a LOT. and you could add a few more fish I think in the long run but its best to wait untill it is cycled fully and then add stock slowly.

Live plants are an awesome addition that can cycle your tank very quickly.. there are many types of plants available but it depends on what kind of lights you have.. if its just a normal stock tank light your limited to lower light plants such as java ferns, java moss and others... the more light you have the more different types of plants can be added.

Your gonna need
Filtration (I reccomend at least 60 gallons of filtration for a 35 gallon because ratings are messed up)
Heater (100w should be ok)
Lights (again.. the amount depends on the plants you want)
water test kit (get a liquid one.. the strips are very innacurate)
water dechlorinator (I reccomend PRIME.. it is by far the only one I even trust)

I do a fishless cycle w/o liquid ammonia (it's a pain to have to add and test every day). I just drop in a fresh shrimp (dead - like the ones we eat) and let the magic begin, test the water every other day.

Best of luck! Welcome to the hobby and AC! :)

-How long does the "fishless" cycle take with Shimp? Is there a thread on this method?

Just put a raw shrimp that you get at the grocery store in some nylon stockings or a media bag to keep it from making a mess in your tank when it is decaying.Check the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate just like you do if you are using ammonia. It will take the same amount of time as using ammonia.
