New tank for my Loaches

Kuhlis will indeed work well with inverts. If you like coldwater, try the hillstream loaches but the temperature must be kept steadily low with maximum oxygen levels despite the contributed heat by the climate and power of powerheads.

Sounds like my ghost shrimp are going to go into my 20 gallon by themselves. What is funny is that I got the 40 gallon FOR the clown loaches but is sounds like I probably should find homes for them and start over!
Thanks for the advice, I'll take all that you can give me.

New pictures of my 40 gallon

Here it is. Doesn't look like much right now but after 50 lbs of gravel, under gravel filter, 1 powerhead(Iam getting two reversable ones from the Doctors), enough towels to look like an exploded laundry, and one mysterious guppy, I am pleased with the progress.

If you're not into kuhlis, there are several other botia types that would fit your tank. I have striatas (zebra) max 4 inch & sidthimunki (dwarf chain) ~2 inch & love them. Others that might work are kubotai or histronica both ~5 inches eventually. Are the guppies going to live with them? Slow swimmers might feel harassed by any of these loaches but not by kuhlis.

Remember any of these need a group of at least 5-6. Oh & kuhlis may go under the UGF if they possibly can.

I love the tank and the tree. Where did the tree come from, if you don't mind me asking ? I have hillstream loaches (sewellia lineolata) with ghost and long arm shrimp, and there are no problems. Course, the shrimp are much larger than the loaches. And I have sids with sulewesi snails and they seem to coexist fine. Course the sids are half the size of the snails. Good luck with your 40.

Tree

I got the tree at Petsmart in the reptile department for $9.99 because one of the little green branches came off. I just siliconed it back on and Walaa! Good as new. and a real deal.

I wouldn't worry about mixing any inverts with hillies. Hillies aren't exactly predatory and prefer to graze on algae and chase each other than to poke on others' business.

And the Hillies are even cuter than the Clowns.

Here is my tank in its latest stage.
