Im thinking about getting a 30 gallon tank FOWLR. Heres the stuff that i will probably buy for the tank.

Protein Skimmer - Aqua C Remora

Powerhead - Thinking about a MarineLand Penguin 660

Heater - Ebo-Jager 100W Heater

Should I use a Deep Sand Bed or Crushed Coral? I've heard there's a backlash against DSBs. What's this about?

Also, what type of test kits should i use?

I'm planning on keeping some hardy, easy to keep, pretty fish at first. Maybe some clownfish, damsels, and gobies. How does this sound, and what would you recomend? I'd like real diverse colors in the fish if possible.

I was planning on getting some Fiji Live Rock because i like how it looks(as opposed to Atlantic Rock) but since there's an U.S. ban on imports of it from Fiji, I guess i will have to get something else. What other rock looks like the Fiji stuff?

If there's anything that i left off, please tell me.

Thanks

I love the Aqua Remora skimmer. The heater sounds fine. I am not familiar with the powerhead. We primarily use Maxi-jet. The DSB debate is on but I think most still use the idea. We do. I believe Salifert and Seachem are the most often recommended test kits. There are many types of live rock. Shop around on-line and check out the pictures. Tampa Bay Saltwater is one suggestion. As far as fish, damsels are the only ones I would avoid. They can be real pain in the necks.

Not much to add, except that there's still live rock coming in from Tonga and the Marshall Islands. Premium Aquatics and Dr Mac and Sons are good sources. The Gulf live rock from TBS and Gulf-View get here faster and have more stuff on them.

If you want to avoid a DSB (there is debate, most of it unscientific on both sides), then go with a thin layer of live sand or a bare bottom. Crushed coral just traps debris. Seems like most people are happy with their DSBs, though.

fish selection

how would the following fish sound:

1 pair Ocellaris Clownfish
2 Pajama Cardinalfish
2 Neon Gobies
1 Pinkbar Goby w/ 1 Tiger Pistol Shrimp

would these fish fight each other or are they too big for a 30 gallon tank? Also, do any of them have special requirements as far as feeding, habitat, etc.?

Thanks

I wouldn't have that many fish in a 30. I would go with one pair (either the cardinals or clowns), the goby/shrimp, and maybe a few other inverts instead of another fish.

I wouldn't have 5 fish--either 2 clowns and one goby with shrimp, for example. For inverts, crabs, other shrimp, snails, hermits, stars, etc. The pistol shrimp should leave most of them alone. Filter feeders could be added once the tank was established.
