Hello,
I need some help please.
I have a 10 gal tank as its nitrites are off the charts..
I have had this 10 aquarium for 10 weeks and it got the nastiest ugly brown algae so like a dummy I took the filters out clean them.. Also the plants I had in it..
I tried a partial water change and the nitrites are still high and the water cloudy..
I'm wanting to move these fish to the 55 gal I'm telling about below..
As of now I just have four patties..

I have just set up and 55 gal tank..
I used the filter system my friend had since I bought the tank from a friend to help with the cycling of the aquarium..
But she had gold fish..
Is it ok to use that filtering system to help with the cycling of this this 55 gal tank?
I need to know what to do... I want to get the fish out of the 10 gal tank and into the 55 gal one..
I have did all the treatments to make sure the water is safe..
I have the filter on and warming the water up..
Should I wait a day or so to put the fish from the ten gallon to the 55 gallon?
I'm just really clueless and my name says..
I would like to this new tank the right way and need some help on how to do this..
I know the water has to cycle that part I do understand..But I need to know so far with the 55 gal have I did everything ok

Can you give us a reading for your nitrites?

Don't be hard on yourself. You can probably move the platties to the 55 gal tank...assuming it's up to temperature. Have you tested the water pH, ammonia, nitrites, etc.?

The filter system will be fine for now, but expect another ammonia and nitrate spike within the next 15 days as the 55 breaks itself in. Gold fish are very messy and you'll probably have to clean the filter soon.

My nitrites on the ten gallon are over 5.0 dark purple.
I checked the new tank no ammonia,Ph is good Nirates are 0ppm..
Getting the temp where it needs to be now and washed the new gravel very well.. But water in 55 cloudy..
Would it be safe to put the water from the ten to the 55 or a least half of it?
I have made so many boo boo's I would love to do it at lest half right this round..

The odds are real good the 55 is partially or completely cycled if you kept any decor and the filter media wet during the transfer and did not expose it to chlorinated water. There is an easy way to test whether a tank is cycled/safe when you have either started with heavy planting and/or use of cycled media.

For every 10 gals of tank water in a running tank, dose 2-3 drops of pure ammonia (use 2 if you will be lightly stocking and 3 if stocking more heavily). Wait about 90 minutes and then test for ammonia. If you get a reading of 0, tank is safe/cycled. If you get an ammonia reading, continue to dose ammonia daily at the same level until you test both 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites.

Goldfish are notoriously messy and their waste load is great for having a well cycled tank.
