coach that would be a great idea except for the fact our members are all over the world....melody... darlin i aint trying to start a fight here, and surely not with you i'm simply talking of my experience and others that i know of.. i see a lot of kids (not much patience to begin with) try the fishless cycle and give up and quit cause they get no fish... i been at this for a long time but as i said this is just my opinion
bush
I know Bush, I didn't think we were fighting at all, sweetie. You da man, I've seen pics of your tanks. You've been doing this a whole lot longer than I have.
I think it's OK to have differing opinions here on AC. I speak for myself and my preference and experience. I'm sure RhondaAnn will listen to all the opinons and decide for herself.
When you do, Rhonda, if you decide to do fishy cycling, just do your best to keep those toxic levels as low as possible and lean on the AC pros to help.
Hi All,
I am new to this forum and I have something to share.
I started off with fishless cycle since I believed that fishy cycle is cruel and I didnt want my water friends to undergo stress.
I got ammonia (I used pure household ammonia from walmart 5% concentrated)to 2ppm for first week and tried to maintain it.
I donno wht went wrong, for the next 8 weeks I had ammonia sitting at 6ppm (API liquid test kit) no mater how many water changes I did.
So I got frusturated, teared down the entire set up and started off with just to 3 Golden white cloud minnow (for a 10 G tank).
Now in 2 weeks my tank is fully cycled and ammonia, nitrite registered is 0 ppm.
Nitrates 20 ppm and the fishes seemed swinning happy all through this period.
I did 15% water change without touching the gravel every 3 days.
In my experience I found fishy cycle to be simple and more practical.
This is just my opinion.
Regards.
Montrealraaj
P.S: Gold cloud minnows are hell of a hardy fish and peaceful
I also added one bio sponge ( just a inert plastic sponge that doesnt hinder water flow)to my 5-15 aquatech filter.
SublimeStar, If you don't mind waiting, do the fishless cycle.
Another good source for articles is Lyretails collection. It's in my sig.
He was my mentor when I started my first planted tank.
Or,
You have an AC30, Right?
If you don't want to wait, I have one that needs cleaned really bad (Like tonight). I can send one of the sponges to you and some Watersprite to get that puppy cycled in 3 days. The price of A small flat rate box and a 72 hour heat pack will cover it.
Oh dear...poor Sublimestar, all this in-put, and no clear answers. So let me muddy the water a bit more. I started a fish in cycle on January 11. I did not have to do daily tank changes. (Weekly, at about 40%) Maybe plants, size of tank, number of fish, and even the water coming out of my tap had something to do with it. There are so many variables. I started with 5 rasbora het. I have increased the poulation, yes, but my readings to this day are 0; 0, and 0. I think my whole story is on these forums. Now to the "mud".
I am way overdue for a quarantine tank. On May 3 (Sunday) I set up a ten gallon Walmart special. I purchased this new "Nutrafin Cycle" product, and, following directions, gave it a shot. This product claims that it allows immediate introduction of fish. Did I believe it? NOT! Interesting results though.
Within the first 24 hours the ammonia level was at 0.25. The next day same. This morning I added the requisite amount of "cycle", came home this afternoon, and I'll be durned if the ammonia isn't dropping...almost at zero. No nitrIte or nitrAte readings yet....but hey, I'm not getting readings of those from the original tank yet either.
Could it be that this stuff relly works?
Ooh. Shoulda mentioned. Did not have a heater in the little tank until today. Walmart did not include it in the kit. This could have slowed things up a bit?
I have to say at this point that even if the front part of the label says that it allows immediate introduction of fish, the instructions on the back of the label instruct a 3 day schedule for new tanks.
