new tank, want oscars-possible?

I would keep two oscars and nothing else. Just keep them and they will grow big enough to take up all the availble tank space.

well the tank i was supposed to be getting fell through, but i am picking up a 48 x 20 x 28 on saturday afternoon, and for £10 less it comes with a stand too. im still planning on the pair of oscars, and this tank is slightly larger aswell.

so larger sized substrate at around 1" diameter they shouldnt dig through? im worried that if they do dig do they actually toss them around the tank? if the gravel is bigger, could it break the glass? i love oscars :grinyes: so this tank will be oscars only. 1 tiger and 1 albino, no other fish.

i will cycle the tank by swapping over half of my up and running fx5 filter media with the new fx5, and put some of my goldfish in there until i find my new oscar babies.

my other thing is, does anyone know where i can find a 30" high aquarium background picture, or will i need to get 8' length and cut up 4' and add it to the top/bottom of the other 4' length? the tallest nice picture ive seen was 24". i will need 26" at least.

change of plans, my new tank is here and set-up, it has the fx5 running on it, and my goldies are in there now. my 6x2x2 is now home to 2 small oscars. they are quite drab looking but they were really energetic in the shop so i got a pair. they are around 4", and they are supposed to be albino but they are more of a very light grey with darker grey fins and a couple of very tiny bright orange dots. not much to look at. will they gain any colous as they age or do they tend to fade out as they age? im planning on at least 2 more oscars to go in with them but they are under quarantine as they are new arrivals at the lfs so i gota wait...im so impatient!

am i likely to have issues if i try to introduce another 2-3 to the 2 already in there? they are around 4" long, and im planning on 2-3 more the same size as these 2.

180gal for a pair of oscars is cool lol. At there current size and such a big tank adding some more O's prob would go over good. Just make sure not to wait to long before doing introductions. Also dont be suprised if u got to take some back. Oscars vary alot in personality. Some docile other bullies. Oh and ummmm take your time when choosing. Look at various shops to find the patterns ur looking for.

Oh one other thing. POST PICS lol

At 4" you could start with several, as they grow, and they won't stay 4" for long, decide which ones you want to keep. Their colors will change dramatically as they get older, you might not notice, but a cool project I saw was someone who'd taken a picture of their oscar every 2 - 3 months over a period of a year, starting when he first got them.

I have a pair of 9" golds that are like a couple of yappy puppies and more demanding of food than my cats. Both cats and oscars tell me every time they see me they're starving, and I'm mean for not feeding them right then and there. ;)

Im planning on doing that project with my Oscar but instead of pics every 2-3 months i wanna take weekly pics of my Oscar. Gonna try to do it with all my fish.

some nice wild Os are available from one of our members...

You should be fine with that setup and great luck with everything for this is what i am doing right now in my 55 gallon

A 55 is way too small for an Oscar. The 180 is a nice sized tank and you could get away with as many as 4 on a short term basis, I don't recommend 3, but you will need efficient filtration. I keep 1 Oscar with 1 pink Convict and a common Pleco of the same size as the Oscar, that just about max's out the tank unless I put more convicts in there.

Good luck and enjoy your new "puppies".
