New tank with sump.. question

I don't think that's necessarily true, at least not 100%

If you have low flow and lots of crap going through your live rock, it's not going to magically make that crap go away any more than the bioballs would. It's just going to hide it better.

Not strictly true there..

The difference between live rock and bio-balls when it comes to particle filtration is that when the particles are on the live rock, they are consumed by the many critters which live in the rock, hence the reason why live rock makes one of the best filtration methods possible...That is why you do not see clumps of food building up on the live rock..simply because it is all consumed..what does stay there, and produce nitrate, if any, is also consumed by micro or macro algae on the rock.

Thanks

Niko

Try taking a powerhead or a turkey baster and blowing into that live rock in a low flow area. Guarantee all sorts of crap will come out of it.

i never said it would not...the whole point is removing the harmfull parts that enter the water column and produce nitrates..that is why live rock is a very good filtration method..

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies..

Just another question about the sump.. when the water comes from the tank into the first section, what would you put in there? The Skimmer? second section I'm guessin is the media? DSB LR Macro? what happens to the last section of the sump? Also can you add a phosphate remover in there for instance?

And finally in your opinions would this cut down on the amount of water changes you do? or would you continue with 20% fortnightly?

Thanks again

We're in the process of building our's now. Our plan is to have the water come in to a filter sock, and have the skimmer in that section as well. Then the fuge, and then a last section for the return. Bubble traps between.

yep, quite agree with that....

Having a sump does not alter your water change routine thought....

Hi Grins and Niko...

Thanks.. just to confirm though sorry... by filter sock do you mean the first section of the sump? or is that a sock with filter media in it? LOL sorry very new to this sump lark.. and the middle part the fuge, that would have the LR, DSB and algae. the last section to return the water to the main display and what is a bubble trap? sorry again but we want to get this right from the start....
Thanks again
