most websites say that discus need to go through reverse osmosis (RO). do i just buy an RO filter and add it to the tank or do i have to put in tap water too?
 
what i meant by that was do i fill the whole tank with RO water or do i mix in tap water with it

you either have to mix it with tap water or add a mineral replacement product.

definitely find out everything you need to know before you buy any discus. that plus going planted is a big jump with a lot to learn about.
 
i always research for a couple of weeks before i buy a different type of fish.
