I just bought a 14 gallon tank kit for the fish in a 5 gal hex. I wanted a better tank, and to be able to add more live plants. I want to move all the fish, the gravel, and most of the plants.

My question is how will this work as far as cycling the new. I will have to add more gravel, I was going to set the tank up tonight with the new gravel. catch the fish keep them in a bucket with most of their old tank water. Add the old gravel and plants, to the new tank then add conditioned water to new tank.

I don't know if I should add their old tank water or not. Do I need to put the old filter cartridge in the new tank? How long do I need to wait before I can put fish in the new tank?

Would this even be the right way to go about this? I thought about setting up the new tank, letting it cycle, then moving the fish gradually over. but I wanted to use the old gravel to speed up the cycle and save money.

Also the old tank has been established for about a year, and all fish are looking pretty healthy.

Any help would be great.
