My neighbor gave us a 30 gal tank that had been well established for quite some time at her home. fish at the time included 2 large pleco, 2 large bala and 20 large tiger barbs. One bala died in transit. one of the large pleco has been given to a friend (two that size was too much for this tank).

Most of the water was removed to move the tank, but gravel remained intact. I did add two more inches of substrate (gravel stuff medium to small size). They didn't have much gravel in there and nothing to power the undegravel filter. The filter they had on it was a power filter with an old carbon sack that had not been changed in quite some time (her husband passed away suddenly two months ago so I am sure the aquarium was not high on her list of priorities).

I added some fish (10 small danios) and two gouramis and 5 or so platys. Thinking the tank had already established bacteria. I think added some slate for a hardware store (after i wash it off). I used the slate to construct a very nice looking cave/terrace complex using aquarium silicone (i checked and it is approved). however, I did not let it sit for 48 hours before introducing it in the tank (got impatient).

The next day all of the fish are panting and their gills are red. I did a 30% water change that day and then a 15% the next day. I went and bought a penquin biowheel filter (150 gph) and added a power head to the undergravel filter (with the hose going out to add bubbles). thinking that maybe it was lack of oxyen. I cleaned the top of the gravel with vacuum during this last water change. And I also cleaned about 20% of the deep gravel at that time as well. There was so much debris and detritis that is was almost black. Will continue to do the same over the next couple weeks in different areas. They continued to pant. so I took out the slate and I am letting it cure for a while now.

This Am they looked a bit better and their panting had slowed. Color is great on all the fish, in fact, the platys are as bright as I could imagine (they are sunset and red).

Could the silicone have caused this? How can i make sure that slate was not the problem. The cave/terrace is really nice and took a long time to construct would love to use it, but only if it is safe. Any suggestions on making sure it is totally clean before putting it back in the tank?

I think disturbing the tank caused a mini cycle. Check ammonia and mybe do another water change again.

Any thoughts on whether the slate and/or silicone could have caused this problem. I am more inclined to think that it was an ammonia and/r nitrite spike because of the red gills. But I just want to be sure before I put my beautiful piece or art back into the tank... Or, I would happily trade anyone this one of a kind cave/terrace masterpiece for 75 gallon tank with canister filtration...hahaha. Thanks for your help

Slate usually do not cause problems in tanks (unless it was treated with a pesticide).

I agree with the above comment regarding slate. Your tank is probably going through a mini-cycle. I would test the water and see what comes up re: ammonia nitrate/nitrite. Also, you might need to eventually rehome that bala and the other pleco, as they will likely outgrow that tank.

That is what I was think (relocating the bala and the pleco). There is a 55g and 75 g on our local craigs list that I am looking at buying/trading. Hopefully it will work out as I my kids really like that shark.

Think bigger than a 75 gallon for a bala shark. Think twice that size, at least.

I deffinately agree you have to get some of the fish out of there. The tiger barbs alone would overstock the tank in my opinion. Daily water changes FTW.

I was gonna say you should probably move the tiger barbs too but I didn't want to be "that guy". Now that its been said, you should probably move the tiger barbs too. If you got that 75 they would be ok. But 20 large tiger barbs is a lot for a 30g tank. Especially one that isn't completley cycled.

Any pics of the tank? If for no other reason than i'm bored and wouldn't mind looking at pics of the tank.

hahahahaha. Sorry that was a typo about the tiger barbs... It should have been 2 (two) tiger barbs. That would be a bunch-o-fish. Sorry for the confusion. The total number of fish currently in the tank is about 23.

Just an update on my new tank. So far no fish deaths so I think I am heading in the right direction. I noticed this weekend that the temperature was going from around 78-82 degrees and higher. So I went out and got a new heater; this worked like a charm. The temp stays constant at 80 f. Took a couple of hours to get it dialed in, but it has been constant since yesterday morning. The fish all seem to be doing well and are very vibrant in color.

Had to reposition some of the aquascape after a near fatality (one of the platys became trapped between glass and a piece of slate). Forunately my oldest daughter saw the fish and we went in for a rescue. No problems noted. Will continue to test the water and do 10-15% water changes daily. But I think we are in good shape. Won't be adding any new fish in the near future, but hopefully will be adding soem cories sometime in May perhaps.
