New Tank

I just got a new 20 gallon long tank that was never used at a local garage sale. The tank has been cycling for two days now. However, I am unsure of what type of fish to buy that won't out grow the tank and aren't too boring either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

do a forum search on 10 gallon tanks and 20 gallon tanks.

if you have any question wether a fish will outgrow a tank then its automaticly too small.

do a couple searches then if you have any questions on a specific fish feel free to ask

It entirely depends on what you are going for... a few fish to breed? A few focal fish versus a group of colorful schooling fish? Will there be live plants? There is a lot to consider... do you have an idea of what type of fish you like?

Thanks for doing some research before you kill a bunch of fish. I would look places online that sell fish. Try www.liveaquaria.com They put recommed tank sizes on all of their fish.

Make sure you don't just use that site for tank or fish sizes. They are notoriously wrong.

Back up your research with several other sites.

Whether it's a 20tall or a 20long makes a difference too.

If you're going to get fish like danios (which I don't recomend)...then a 20long would be better for them as they are very active swimmers and would appreciate the horizontal space to swim in.
Blue rams would do better in a 20long as well, since they prefer the horizontal space as well.

A 20tall would be better for taller or slower moving fish...if that makes any sense...lol....ex...angels and discus are taller fish (I don't recommend either one for a 20gallon tank though..they get too large) Gouramis would do well in a 20tall, they are slower moving fish and will use the entire tank to swim in.

Consider the needs of the fish that you would like to get when you are deciding. Do some research and plan it out well and you can have quite a nice setup there.
