I have been trying to read up on the best way to start a new saltwater tank up. I have the all of the equipment (tank, filter, etc...) What I am wondering is I have read about different filtration sysetms for the house which make for good water (gets all of the negatives out of the water) for a saltwater tank. 1st I am wondering if anyone can recommend a good system to purify my water. And second does a brita do the same thing for me? And last I will be filling a 75 gallon tank from the start is it ok to use a NEW garbage can to accomplish this?

a new garbage can will be great, i use a 45 gallon Brute garbage can to store my saltwater. The Brita definelty does not do the same thing as a RO/DI unit. AFAIK all the Brita does is run the water through carbon to take any foul tastes out of it basically. I got my RO/DI from www.abundantflowwater.com about 2 years ago and its been working beautifully. anyone of these will definetly do the trick for u. HTH

A new garbage can will work fine. The Rubbermaid Brute series is recognized as being made for food grade applications and gets recommended often for it.

For a RO/DI unit check out these sites:

It's best to stick with one that has a 75 gpd membrane (higher rejection rate than 100 gpd membrane = better outcoming water from the RO membrane and longer lasting DI resin) and a vertical DI resin chamber. A pressure gauge (either included or added on) after the pre-filter cartridges and before the RO membrane will allow you to monitor the pre-filter cartridge lifespan. The pressure will drop as they clog. Try to pick up a TDS meter at some point, too, to double check that your RO/DI unit is working properly and to know for sure when it's time to replace the DI resin (color changing resin is nice, but you shouldn't wait until the entire cartridge has turned color to change it if you expect to get "pure" water out of it).
