new to fish

Hi all,

I'd like to begin a relation with some fish, but, being new to the subject, I am afraid to make the, of course, commun mistakes causing the suffer of my future beloved. Still haven't bought even the tank, I am very open to suggestion and training.

Learn about "cycling process" of a new tank. A very common mistake is adding fish the same day you setup your tank.

When buying a tank, try to buy the biggest tank you could afford. With bigger tank, mistakes are not as drastic as smaller tank since large water volume tends to be more stable.

hey skere!!!, welcome to the hobby hehe as rohn said definately get the biggest tank you can afford 1 mistakes arent that drastic and 2 once you get a small tank you will want a big tank anyway so save time. start with some easy fish such as zebra danios these are pretty and hardy and they will fit into nearly all communities once you have decided where to go. also get some good filtration it will help.GOODLUCH and ENJOY

Bigger is better!! Well, I guess not always, but the tank will just start looking smaller and smaller IMO!! I've went from a 35 gallon to a 180 gallon in the last 2 years! The cycling process is really the most important. I recommend doing some research as to what kind of fish you would like first. A great idea is to go the store where you would most likely get your fish and write down the ones you like. Then come home and do some research. Depending on what sort of fish you want, you can then get a tank that will be an appropriate size for them when full grown. Then you can start the process of fishless cycling (really the least stressful way to go, for you and the fish) and continue reading about things that you have questions about while that is going on.

Another good idea is to look on ebay and your local papers for a used tank. I've bought almost all of mine that way, and got really good deals.

I'm in the same position as you. Just started, and I'm looking for a deal on a tank, and I'm trying to be patient. Depending on what city you live in craigslist is another good place to look for a used tank. I just barely missed a 75 gallon acrylic tank for $50 :sad:
