new to planted tanks

so far as returning the plants not possible they came from winnipeg, i did send the person pics of each of the tanks and told him what kind of fish were in them and they gave me a variety of plants that they said would do well in hard water and i figured it this way from what i had looked into if the fish ate some of the plants then the fish got to eat from the salad bar as it were which is why i only put a few plants in with the pacus cause the plant guy told me they would probably eat any vegetation

so far as the other plants i figured i would lose about 25% of the vegetation due to being new at this either to getting abused by the fish or by just not making it some of the cichlid keepers i spoke to here said that in african settings often for many kinds of cichlids there are no plants so they will go after the plants either rearranging them or outright destroying them

in the 55 i find that the zebra is just moving so much sand that he either buries them or they lose their footing an float up and in the one 75 i have watched the christyi actually ripping the plants to shreds but not all the plants just the tall ones that seem to be in their swim path

in the 100g i have been watching the crayfish actually eat the plant

As a side note I LOVE THIS SHOT FOR THE REFLECTION IT SHOWS OF THE KIDS WHO WERE FASCINATED WITH THE TINY LOBSTER

this may sound funny to some of you but this time around i wanted to try my hand at plants and asked for a variety that would do well in the hard regina water and if i lost 25-30% then i would chalk it up to a first time loss i will take a bit more time to look about this area of the forum to see

from what im looking at the use of fert seems to me to cause rapid decay of organic matter added the extra heat didnt seem to help either

its kinda like everything i looked up about the christyi said that they would be able to hold their own if i put them in the 55g for a week with my zebra and the johani and yet i lost one of them when the male zebra took it personal but since ive moved the two others to the 75 and added their old tank mate from the lfs as they were all in the same tank for months together they have done fine

at any rate ill keep lookin into this forum area a bit more since i now have put plants in and thanks for any input

well i got to the bottom of why my five side corner tank took a dive first its a 40g not a 60g so when i treated it with fert , anti ick and pimafix i totally overdosed it

i found the empty bottle of fert that i used tetra flora pride

on the brighter side i was able to save four of my fish in the corner tank have done constant wc with prime treatment to get it right again added a bubble bar to help agitate the water

Why were you dosing "anti-ick" and pimafix?

i did it cause a few days after i put the plants in an did the fert i took the temp up to81-82 i came into work an half the fish had the white fleck of ick on them so i dosed the water and then in the next few days there was a fungus thing beginning to set in so i got that pimafix stuff

after talking with a few people off an on this thread i find that i did not need to up the temp also i measured the gallon size of the tank wrong and basically messed up my tank i overdosed the tank by 50%
