I am in the process of cycling a 12 gal. Eclipse for my Betta. He is now in an unplanted, cycled, heated 3 gal Eclipse. I would like to have plants in my new tank but being new to the whole aquarium process I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. I hope to have a few plants that look nice, give Betta some privacy and take very little care.

Ideally, I would like a larger plant in the back and then a few smaller ones towards the front. Are there plants that I can put in that will just grow in the gravel I already have and do not require fertilizer or special care? Would I put them in now or wait until the tank cycles? I was planning on ordering online from Dr. Fosters in the hopes that I would be less likely to get bad bacteria than I would from LFS.

Any advice you can give me would be appreciated!

Hi MaryAlice,

Some of the most "hard to kill" plant species include Java Ferns, anubias, and crypts. Java ferns, either broad leaf or narrow leaf can take that background large plant position, with anubias positioned in the midground and foreground. The crypts can be ascent plants to the whole "scape."

With the Java ferns and anubias you don't want to bury them, but rather tie them to a rock or piece of wood. These plants won't require much in terms of light and adding fertilizers. Though the occasional root tab like Seachem Flourish root tabs can help the crypts as they are root feeders.
