My new tank is running well aside from some green algae that is starting to clear. All my tests are good so today i bought a little piece of live rock with polyps on it. My salinity is at .22 and as far as i have heard i should bring it up to .24? If that is the case i hope .22 does not kill them before I can add some salt. I have a water change scheduled in 2 days and was going to bring the salinity up then. So far it has been 3hrs and they have not come out yet, this may be normal. My calcium levels are good as I have tested. Do i need any tank supplements for them etc? Thanks!

it can take up to a couple of weeks for them to open... and they will close when you do a WC, or when your lights are out for the night or moving them.
if your bring them out of the water, thats when they dont open for a few weeks... if you do a WC or just turned the lights on for the day, they should open in a few hours
.24 - .26 is fine... i have mine at .25 and they have been growing like a weed

Will i be ok at .22 for a day or two? I don't have time to prep new water at the moment due to work. Thanks for the info!

i dont see why not... the lowest my reef has ever been was when i eye-balled the salt i was using, and didnt test it ( :duh: :wall: -- do not try this at home...aaaa)
anyway, it was at .16

everything lived- i think yours will be fine

what kind are they?

Your SG is not ideal but it won't kill the zoas/palys. They are typically resilent creatures. You can up your SG a bit by topping off with SW versus FW before your WC, not sure how much evaporation you get though.

As Daayda said they can sometimes take a bit to open up, they close up due to light changes, stress, pests (including us if we touch them), and predators. On the later, did you check them for them? They can be difficult to spot, this page has great photos of what to look for: http://www.zoaid.com/index.php?module=Gallery2&g2_itemId=384

I can't see any predators. I did have a few hitchikers that I am happy about, 3 baby turbo snails and a baby starfish (it has long skinny white arms and is so small at this stage i barely noticed it. How many hrs of light should they get each day? I'm doing the waterchange today and will gradually bring the levels up. Thanks!

Keep them on the same lighting cycle as the rest of your tank, you're trying to mimic natural daylight hours as much as possible. The white starfish is a micro brittlestar, a nice hitchiker and won't get much bigger than you probably see it.

They've already come out :)

Any idea if they will spread around my tank and if so how long does that take? 3-4 months?

i have several patches of GSP in my tank and i need to get rid of some. one piece i have is a foot long and 5 inches wide. all of my rocks have been covered to the point that i dont mind lossing any to other pylops.
