New to this all starting out with a 2.5 gallon betta aquarium. help is appreciated!!

LOL, that's silly...a pea can't do intestinal damage. They may eat too much and get full, and it is alarming when bettas have those huge overextended tummies, but contrary to what you may have heard, it is extremely rare for an animal to eat so much that it causes itself harm. You could feed less than a whole pea, but really, one pea isn't going to hurt anything. These are just a few websites that mention the pea remedy to avoid and relieve constipation:

You've just learned your first lesson in aquarium keeping. Some people are very...superstitious? And will say things like this that are, for lack of a better word, dumb. You have to use your own common sense and BS meter.

Just yesterday someone was saying to me that their fish died because their dechlorinator must have expired, since it smelled BAD. They were all upset and were going to complain to the company that the dechlorinator killed their fish. Well, guess what? Dechlorinator always smells bad, a sulfur kind of smell, and all that happens when it expires (though it lasts for years) is that it stops working properly, so the chances that it was responsible for the fish death are virtually nil.

If it was truly expired and the water company decided to add a particularly large dose of chloramine to the water, maybe there would have been an ammonia spike from the water change, but even then, it's very unlikely. Probably had more to do with the fact that she hadn't changed any water in 6 months, which I found out later with more questioning.

Ok, this seems to be a good time to bring this up.

After 9 months does fish food go bad? I was told this by a guy at petsmart (I know.....) but he also told us not to follow the instructions because the company just wants you to overfeed your fish so you buy more of their product. So it didnt seem like a sales pitch.

It doesn't go bad, but it goes stale and loses nutritional value (not to mention taste). Store it in the freezer for the longest shelf life, but definitely after 9 months, pitch it. I buy the smallest containers I can so that they are gone within 3 months or so.

well i had read that if the pea was too big it could cause intestinal blockage that is all. better to air on the safe side and consult other resources.

In other news tho Elsie is doing great in her new tank, she seems very happy, she even has made a little bed at the bottom she likes to rest/ swim past a lot. The tank is on a large bookshelf i can see from my bed and it is great to wake up to the sight of her swimming! heater should be here tomorrow so once that is in the tank will really be almost perfect. I was wondering if there is a way to get moss to grow on a particular rock? There is one rock in general that i would love to grow moss on.

so i went to petsmart today. their selection of plants was lacking. Luckily i found a local fish store. the guy asked me what i was looking for and i basically filled him in on my tank. he gave me a small java fern and some clippings for next to nothing. i put the fern in elsie's tank and im growing her clippings in a goldfish bowl i bought at goodwill and her old vase

Yep, I too love waking up to see my betta (a red double tail male with blue stripes) swimming around happily in his little 1g tank. But I will wake up a lot better when I can finally get him in my hex 5 gallon next week! Just need to get those fish in the 10g so he can take over the 5.

I bought the smallest they had at petsmart. Good thing because my new favorite pet store birds and beast will sell you the little container then refill it for 1/4th the price of buying it new. I wonder if they will refill with different types each time if I ask. Probably have to buy the most expensive little one so they are giving me an equal or lesser value.

ssuchem13, You are doing GREAT. A lot better than I did when I first started out. You are providing for your betta very well based on your ability (local stores, and ordering online). I know people down the street have a 5g set up (that I set up for them) and they havent cleaned it once. They go through fish after fish, but I gave them a zebra danio and they have been unable to kill it. I think I will have to go clean their tank for them next week.

Hey, you could spread around how to properly care for a betta at your school. Please stick around after you get everything done for your betta! (if you are able to stick around)

thx nerdyrcdiver. I actually take alot of joy from caring for her. i check on her when i get back from class, feed her, and been doing water changes at night. Being a Chem major doesn't exactly make my life stress free. But have her around has done wonders for my anxiety. i grew up having a large saltwater tank in our home, and Ive had bettas before, they lasted 3-4 years in their small bowls. But being a kid i didn't know any better. I'm hoping to one day have a whole room in my house devoted to fish and tanks. But for now being a college student comes first and it seem taking care of her will be easy once the tank is cycled. Im looking to get a 10 gallon tank when they go on sale. the girl at petsmart told me it would be soon and they will get a lot of stock in. maybe start up a second tank at that point and cycle it right. Get a few tropical fish and put it in the living room. my roommate said he would be down to split costs so this could work nicely. either way im still focused on taking care of Elsie and i will definitely be sticking around.
