New to this

Live rock is the big chunks of rock that are 4in or bigger. Live sand is the sand on the bottom

Live Rock is rock that is taken from the ocean and still has all the corals, sponges, algaes, and other critters living on it, hence its "Live".

and both of these are other biological filters correct that would work well with a wet/dry system?

since it has all that stuff living on it does that mean the standard bulbs wont work for it and is this what everyone refers to as a reef setup?

thanks for all this advice and guidance it is very helpful

Since we're on the topic of starting a SW tank I have been wondering about sumps. When is it appropriate to use sumps? I am currently in the process of rebuilding a 55g tank that was given to me. Resealed and new frame. I have 3 FW fish but I am going to give them away as SW fish are just better. :P

A reef system refers to corals and other types of inverts that require specific types of light (anemones fall into this). Essentialyl Reef means a oceanic reef ecosystem, which is mostly corals and fish/inverts that live on coral reefs (but avoid fish and inverts that eat them, since you only have a limited amount and dont want to set up a $200 buffet)

Cured live rock is live rock that has already had all the organisms die off that either gets damages in shipping, or are near impossible to keep in captivity. Anything thats left varies and you wont know what is on it, hence you wont know if any lighting is needed (which is primarily for inverts that have symbiotic algae, which are mostly corals and Anemones), however if you go reef you will need good lighting.
