Hey folks. After noticing that my Aqua Tech 20-40 gallon power filter was wearing out, I decided to upgrade a bit replace it with a Whisper 30-60 gallon power filter.

I couldn't believe my ears! The thing is LOUD!! Whereas my Aqua Tech was nearly silent, this filter is downright annoying and can be easily heard 30 feet away!

Have any of you had experience with this filter? Is this thing supposed to be this loud or is there something wrong with mine? I'm about to take it back and see if I can get a refund as I'm not sure I can live with the noise.

Thanks,
Parja

First off, welcome to AC.

I had a small Whisper designated for up to 15 gallons I think. I didn't really notice noise, but it did stop pumping water at random times. I took it back to the store, spent $8 and picked up an AC Mini.

I also have a Whisper heater which has quite an inaccurate temperature setting. I don't forsee myself purchasing Whisper products in the future.

My opinion is the impeller is not seating correctly. Turn the pump off and on several times to try and 'jog' it in place. Also, is there air in it?

You might want to try and remove the impeller and replace it to see if it was not seated right..

If it can be heard 30 feet away, it has to be the impeller. I've had a few AquaClears that had some impeller noise...

Mine doesn't get that loud but occasionally the top rattles quite a bit, since it is just a loose fitting top. I often just take it off.

Thanks for the replies and the welcome.

To answer the questions, the sound is definitely from vibration. I can feel the vibration in my tank all the way on the opposite corner of it.

I tried jogging it and removing and reinstalling the impeller, but it didn't change anything. After taking the impeller out, I held the shaft horizontal and spun the impeller on the shaft. It seemed to come to rest in the same position every time leading me to believe the impeller itself is unbalanced. I think I'll try to take it back to the store and replace it. If that doesn't work, I'll see if I can get a new impeller from the manufacturer.

Thanks for the help everyone!
