new world vs old world

Currently I've got only New World cichlids, Convicts and Apistos.

I'd really like to get a Tanganika tank setup up though, or maybe just a shellie tank. Some other fish I'd like to try out some day are Tropheus, those are some impressive looking fish.

Hey Marcus, I have the Eartheater book by Weidner and it is one of the best books I own! Unfortunately it is a reminder of the eartheaters I'll never have, because very few eartheaters are allowed to be imported into Australia. The only ones available here are; jurapari, steindachneri, balzanii, brasiliensis and surinamensis of which I all have. Unfortunately since they banned import of jurapari's here nearly all stock is inbred :(

Kit, that sucks. I currently have Geo. sp. 'Columbia'. It's in the Weidner book and has the black stripe on the cheek. I'm hoping to get the Tapajos Redhead within the next month or so.

I like to keep cichlids in a community environment so I can observe their interaction. That leaves me with Africans because of their small size suitable for community environment. I like CAs but the colorful ones are mostly tank busters suitable for loner tanks only. The smaller, community suitable CAs are generally dull in color with the exception of a few species such as Nics and Thorichthys species which I do mix in with my Africans. Many SAs are suitable for community tank environment but many, such as Apistogramma and rare Geophagus species, need soft water and don't do well in my water. Other than a G. surinemsis that I kept for 8 years, all other Geo speices I attempted to keep ended up dying from bloat.
