My fiance and I are currently working on establishing a 55g planted tank. We've bought a few plants from some LFS in our neighborhood and find that we're spending a fortune! We're wondering if anyone has any tips on how to find lower cost plants suitable for an aquarium.. We've been a bit leary about buying plants from anywhere other than LFS' since we've got Silver dollar fish which enjoy munching on the plants from time to time. A friend of ours uses plant clippings from his yard, we've so far been reluctant to do this because we worry that non-aquatic plants will be toxic to the fish. Any advise is appreciated!

I use www.aquabid.com. There is a great plant selection and the prices are much lower than any LFS. There are shipping costs of course, but the highest I've ever paid is $6.50 and the plant prices more than compensate.

I'd start at looking for aquarium plant clubs in your general area. They're usually a good source of plant clippings for much lower than the price you'd pay at your LFS. Most of the times they're free :)
