G'day all!!! have a problem with keeping pregnant guppy's alive. I woke up this morning to find one female stuck to one of my filers.I've checked out the tank to find nothing out of the ordinarily.Water has been change two days ago and a filter change yesterday.Theirs only one male in the tank and eight females now, there was nine.:wall::help:

how are you changing the filters, and why? if youre just out and out replacing the entire filter media, you're doing more harm than good, as most of the beneficial bacteria that remove ammonia and nitrites are in the filter.

if thats the case, a severe ammonia spike would definitely take the life of a pregnant fish that was diverting energy to her fry's development.

Do you know your water parameters? If the water is good it could just be the stress of pregnancy. Livebearers sometimes will die during the birthing or even before.

Hi all! to answer some of the following? when i do a filter change I do half at a time then wait a week and change the other half. there is are three small (100lh) and one big (700lh) plus two box filters.Six in total.Gmh I think your right mate! Thanks for the in put guys.

Chris.

that is a whole lot of filters for the tank...how big is it?

The filters are running in.For my breeding tank that is being setup next week.

I'm going to use my two air flow box filters for the bottom level and 100lh filter with spay bar for the top.I just need a cheap light and 100w heater.

The tank that the filters are in now(in feet). 1.5Lx1.5Dx2H..

Now the breeding tank is a little different the top level is part of the main tank
The main is 2Lx1Dx1H, the top is1Lx1Dx.5H.with a glass wall and with an opening for easy fish access.while there is fry in the top level of the tank I can stop the fish coming and eating fry..:)

why do you have so much filters?
and i don't see any sense in changing filter media. just clean it in syphoned aquarium water and return it, and you don't have to do even that untill you see that their flow has been reduced.
the point of filters is more in biological(chemical) filtration than in mechanical removal of debris. if you change your filter media too often then you can't have enough bacteria that will keep your biological balance.

Ya!! thanks for the input mate.I don't change the filter media.
I do what your saying.syphoned tank water is the best and the plants out side love it to.A win,win situation

Thanks Chris.

I'll tells ya it cold down here!!!!!!!!

oh yes - the plants really love it.
i didn't think of it untill i red a post from one fellow aquarist - he syphons water out of the tank with a long hose, and it always waters the same part of his lawn.
he says that that watered part is about three shades of green darker than the rest of the lawn :D

when i clean the filters i let the watter settle down, so that i can water the plants, but collect the mud that falls to the bottom too.
it's great for house plants (it has biological fertilizers from fishe's poo, and all the micro elements from chemical fertilizers that we put in :) )
