I would just like to know if anyone here has show/main tank that showcases saltwater plants and macroalgae instead of the usual corals? If so, what are the basic equipments/materials to be able to attain such tanks? I am planning to setup a 50 or 75 gallon fowlr with macroalgae in the near future so as of now i am on the stage of collecting information regarding these setup of mine. i've read over the internet articles about mangroves and indeed its really beautiful.

Thank you so much in advance for any response.

hi there kabayan charles!! :thm::thm::thm:

Mabuhay!

Thats a very very nice refugium, how big is your refugium? and what type of lights are in your refugium? the macros in it where did you get it?

@grins
i'll look for mcslappy

Mabuhay!

The tank is only 20 gallons and is tied into my reef system mid way between the display tank and the sump. The lights are regular household compact fluorescents, which I also use over my display tank with a single 250w MH. All the plants, heck, everything in my system from the corals, rock, sand and fish were all collected by myself here off of Mactan island. (Cebu).

hi there sir charles,
Mabuhay!

You're website is so insightful, practical, straight to the point and doable. I guess some of my apprehensions and questions were answered or at least given me some light on the matter. I really love the "rants" section coz some of the things in there just gave me a hearty laugh.

I love what you are doing to your setup sir, i am so green with envy. i am just wondering how much does your electricity costs? :eek: scary but with some of your innovations i guess it helps in cutting electrical costs.

I love and i will really try to emulate your refugium setup sir. But the thing is i'll be trying it on my 75 gallon tank. So sir, what would be the most basic equipments that i've got to have in order for my FOWLR and macroalgae to thrive? I hope that i can do away with a sump for the meantime.

to everyone: please feel free to suggest/comment on this idea of mine

thank you so much in advance

Thanks, Its always nice to hear that the website is of use, or can give ya a good laugh at least.

Electrical costs... ouch, lets just say that it almost matches what I pay in house rent each month. But thats not entirely the tanks fault because I keep at least one of the two A/C units running 24 hours a day as I can not handle the heat and humidity here, unless of course I am face down over the reefs...lol

For what you have planned with your tank, A refugium is not really needed as you will have created such an algae environment within the main tank. I only have the refugium since I do my best to keep my reef system running as a mimic to what I see of the reef habitats, which means there is an algae / sea grass area, as well as the coral reef. That and my algae control in the display tank is far too effective for any type of algae, including the macros, to survive.
If you keep your display tank heavily planted as you have planned, along with a 4 inch DSB (per your pm) and live rock, I don't see the need for any other equipment other than lights and some pumps for water flow. Depending on how many fish you keep and how much you feed the tank, A skimmer is optional. The only possible trouble I see in not having an overflow, as used with sumps, is that you may at first, while the system is finding its balance, have a protein film form on the waters surface. This can be forced back into the water by simply having a powerhead placed right at the waters surface so that it will break up (agitate) the waters surface.
One thing to watch with heavily planted tanks is the Iron levels, as algae will deplete it from the water fairly quickly and start to lose their dark green coloration and vitality. You can get an Iron supplement made for just such a purpose, or just keep up with a regular water change schedule instead.

good afternoon sir charles and to others as well,
Mabuhay!

thanks for the invaluable information regarding my tank setup. I'll document my progress as i build my setup as per suggestion/advise from you and others on the internet. I'll check out some things in Cartimar this coming weekend ( i dont know if you're familiar with the place, its somewhere in Buendia, taft avenue).

As of now, my focus will be macro-algaes and much much later about inhabitants that i can put in there. Maybe i'll start putting fish in there early next year. I want the tank to fully cycle for at least 2 months. But i hope i can put in macro-algaes and marine plants (if there will be any available in Cartimar) in there the soonest time possible.

thank you thank you thank you

follow-up question:
can i use NSW to cycle my tank? but i am afraid that it might get infected by ich parasite? and how long do i have to turn on the lights? with regards to iron supplements, what brand do you use sir charles?

thanks
