Hello -

I have a 20 gallon. I am planning to slowly introduce 8 neon tetras and 6 dwarf rainbows. Is this ok?

Sounds ok to me, but I'm not sure what are these Dwarf Rainbows your talking about? Are they Sharks or just regular Rainbow fish but Dwarf size?

I hope you have better luck with your neons then I did :(

Is this them?

They're pretty, but how are the tetra's going to like the salt? And isn't that a bit empty for a 20gal? Tetra's cap at about 1.5" max and all the ones I ever owned were about .75" so you could potentially have a school of 12 tetras and still fit the rainbows in simply because the tetras are narrow.

They're a type of rainbowfish, but they only grow to less than 2" :) I hope I can keep the neons alive too - I think they're terribly sweet....

It's good to hear I might be able to have more neons! I am quite concerned that I don't overstock, hence the lower numbers. I'll check into the salt question - the site you provided is the first I've seen mention salt for rainbows :)

I have a lightly stocked 20 gallon as well. It's a really good idea for small tanks, I think. It is very easy to keep my water parameters under control. If you do want a bottom dweller, may I suggest a few amano shrimp? They don't take up a whole lot of bio mass and they will work clean-up and algae control. Maybe it is because of the light stocking, but my shrimp are always out all over the place, working away.

I wouldn't put the dwarf rainbows in a small tank. Yes, they stay sized small enough, but these are very active fish--they will be a blur in a samll tank, and startle any shy fish into hiding.

I'd bump up the number of neons to about 15, and then add a trio of kuhli's to keep the bottom clean.

I have 2 Pictus Cats for bottom dwellers in my 25g tank. I´ve heard that the Clown Plecos make the best bottom dwellers.

Now that I sort of brought it up (and hope this isnt a silly question), but why do some spell out the Pleco as Pl*co? I never understood why...
