Newbie Tank setup help..

Yes, it is best not to be doing water changes while the system is cycling, unless you have a rediculous ammount of ammonia in there. It does just prolong the cycle, and just do a 50% water change when its all complete to replenish trace elements...

I always thought that doing water changes during the cycle prolonged the cycling process. It was my understanding that the initial water change was to be done after the cycling process was completed in order to reduce the resulting concentration of NitrATES.

It depends on whats on your live rock. If you want to keep any critters then keep the ammonia low. However mine didn't look to have anything on them so I added ammonia daily to keep it around 5ppm. It only took 2-3 weeks to cycle the tank.

I just bought a test kit and tested the Ammonia and Nitrite.
When i left my house it was looking like it was about 2.5-3.0 NH3 and .3 NO3
Havent checked the pH yet as im at a friends house dropping off the wife for business, ill get pics when i return to the homestead.
Thanks guys!
Atnixon, you seem very knowledgable on these boards, Iappreciate the input with my New SW tank! Look forward to reading more of your posts :)
