newbie tropical setup

Guppys and and a few shrimp (of the small, non-filter feedig species only) would work. Tank isn't big enough to properly keep any species of tetra. I think it may be big enough for a single drawf/pygmy puffer, but those need to be fed snails atleast once a week so that there teeth don't grow to large. In order to get the snails, your going to require a second tank.

The drawf gourami mentioned on the box is a no, however the platy may work.

However, if you want to get livebearers(guppys, platys, etc), you have to get all males - females are often pregnant when you buy them and will overload your tank with fry.

thanks for your response,

any other ideas on possible fish combinations for this setup?

im open to any suggestions....

if i had a betta what else could i have with it? a few shrips? and a couple of guppies?

im quite excited its like creating my own miniture world.

please understand, with this size tank you are VERY limited in what you can house properly.

IMO, platies are out of the question. Having 2 males on a 3.5g will lead to problems. Same with guppies. You are limited to males with all live bearers as any females to buy will likely be pregnant.

My recommendation is 1 killiefish, 1 snail, thats it!

Also keep in mind there are different subspecies of killies. You want something tiny tiny tiny!

i respect that its a small tank. By the way its 4 gallons rather than 3.5 not like that makes a difference anyway lol

im not to keen on snails not my scene...

i know its pretty bad for a tropical tank but i just wanted a few small fish... and mabe a shrimp or two :-(

the box says no more than 6 small fish....

thanks for your advice

The box is wrong. House in 6 fish in that size tank is animal abuse. It will significantly shorten their life span.

Why didn't I think of this sooner? How bout's some heteranda formosa? According to tricksterpup, you can keep up to 40 of them in a 5g, so I would imagine 15-20 would be ok in a 3.9g (ya, I did the caclulations myself - it's not a 4g or a 3.5g, if it really holds 15L).

what about some pygmy cory's?
