Hello all,

I have a 20 gallon with iron stand and several goldfish that are getting huge(well, 6) and I was thinking of upgrading to something bigger.

A dream would be a 55 gallon with a stand. Right now I can get a top fin with lights for 119 and a stand for 129. I have an Aqua Clear 50 but can get another for 19 dollars or use the orginal top fin cheap filter that came with the tank.

My question is...is this a good upgrade? Will those two filters be fine? How hard is a 55 to keep clean. How much can I get for the 20 gal that is 6mos old? Is it worth it?

Thanks.

If you plan on keeping all six of your goldfish, you definitely should upgrade! I believe the standard is 30 gallons for one goldfish, plus another ten for each additional goldfish. So I'm not even sure if 55 gallons will be entirely sufficient for all six, but I'm no expert. Perhaps you shold wait for the opinion of an experienced goldfish owner before deciding on your new tank's size. As for filtration, I know it is common practice to double-filter goldfish tanks, since they are rather messy little guys. So whatever size tank you end up getting, get a filter for a tank twice as big, or buy two filters for it, as you say you plan to do for the 55. In any case, if you really do enjoy your pets, the upgrades will be entirely worth it-- with proper care, your goldfish can live upwards of twenty years!

A) I recommend buying a used tank. I know it sounds cheap, but I'd wait and keep looking for a used tank...they are out there. you can go to. There are plenty of websites or classifieds that have them.

B) Goldfish suck

C) You'd eventually want to get a canister filter

D) They aren't hard to clean if you love your fish. Pretty much just gravel vac once a week.

Six goldfish need a bare minimum of 15-20g each, depending on the type. I assume these are fancy goldfish and not pond or feeder goldfish?

If they are feeder types, I'd advise you to trade them in or sell/give them away. They will grow well over 12+ inches each and need to be in a large pond.

The fancies will need at very bare minimum 90gallons and that's with CONSTANT maintenance. They'd do far better in a 120g tank.

They also need double filteration of 10x turnover per hour.

Perhaps consider cutting it down to two goldfish and a 30-40g tank?

canister wont do good with messy eaters...
overflow!!!

I found a used tank

Its a 55 gallon with wood(Oak?) base and canopy top, light and filter(emperor 450?).

It needs some TLC and has a few bumps in the cherry finished wood. The owner is cleaning it up now.

$200.

Whatcha think?
