Newby preparing a 90 gal

They are probably normal neons. My petsmart has some "Jumbo Neon Tetra" They are not any different. That's a good point that they could be Cardinal tetras.

THANKS ALL
I am still kinda back to square one :(

how about soem cory cats for your bottom?

Otos would be great once your tank is cycled and stable. Or you could get a Siamese algae eater, not Chinese. Corys are bottom feeders, but not algae eaters.

As for gouramis, all varieties can be very aggressive toward their own species. I have 2 male dwarf powder blues in a 180g, and they are starting to pick on each other!?

Get your angles small and add them right away. You don't want to introduce full-grown angels, they will be bullies

You still need a mid-level group, unless you're going with a lot of sailfin mollies
.

I would highly recommend a small group of yoyo loaches. (maybe 3). They are very active, grow quickly, and are a lot of fun to watch.

They are "aggressive" in the sense that they eat like crazy, but will not harm any other fish.

Although I don't have any planted tanks, I can assume they would only be good as they would eat any snails that might get carried in from the plants.

Also, IMHO, I would not buy gouramies again. Every gourami I have had has died in short order. It is my experience that these fish are SUPER-susceptible to disease and parasites. Especially the dwarf ones. Or maybe I've just gotten unlucky? These are some of the only fish I've ever "lost."

THANKS more more more

Great info...feel free to send more of your experiences. I picked the kuhlii loaches because they eat algae, but are delicate enough not to damage vegetation, and I plan on planting the tank like mad.

I will forget the goramis, and move on. Think color....think interesting....think 90gal and all I have so far are some loaches some sailfin mollies and a cory or two .... i have to build this right.

xoxox all who helped

I wouldn't mix cories with yoyos. The yoyos aren't aggressive, its just that they get larger and heavier than most cories and they are fast and don't watch where they're going. Cories can't handle getting knocked around. If you get more than one angelfish, you may end up with a pair and when they get mature and decide to mate, they can be very nasty. (think dead fish). Have you thought of rainbows? A school of the neon dwarf would be pretty or for color, bosemani or turquoise.
5-7 rainbows
5 or 6 kuhlies
11 panda cories
8-10 rasbora espei
and when your tank has been established for a couple of months 5+ ottos

My angels spawn in my 75 every couple weeks... they chase the other fish away from their filter inlet, but I haven't seen any actual damage. I would assume a 90 would be even better.

I also keep a large snakeskin Gourami in my tank, without any problems between him and the Angels. Big Angels WILL eat your neons though, jumbo or not. I had a dwarf gourami in the tank for a year also, until he died last week. Again, I never saw any aggression between him and the angels or the big gourami.

Loaches aren't really algea eaters... they're more scavanger types, like cories... they'll eat food crumbs that fall to the bottom and keep your substrate clean, but they won't make a dent in any algea. Besides, if you're going with a planted tank you should have some kind of carbon injection, and that will go a long way to combating algea. Beyond that ottos or rubberlip plecos will go with your fish and will keep your tank looking pristine. I do love loaches though... everytime I've went to pick some up though they were in terrible shape at the fish store ;) Just don't expect them to control algea.

A beta won't go with angels or gouramis.

I agree with the comments about the tetras... if you want a schooling fish, a small school of rainbows or one of the larger tetra species would work well, but neons will always be bite-sized (as will cardinals, danios, glo-lights, and the like)

FISHPOOR!! Thanks for some of the best info. The more the better. I want to be armed with info. :idea2:

Thanks PEBCO
I miswrote. I didn't mean algae control as much as substrate cleaner :) I like the loaches too. I really wanted the pleco really bad, but everyone I speak to says that they scratch the inside of acrylic tanks. I have heard it several times, so I am assuming it is true.
Thanks so much for taking the time to write your suggestions :bday:
