We went through some of the same process. I too, had some of those same silk plants in my tank (got them from petsmart?). I got my initial batch of plants from customdrum, and it was over.... I'm hooked on the live plants now.
I'm currently in the "throw them in the tank and see if they grow" phase.

That's great.I now have only one tank out of 8 that has fake plants.
I have found that as long as you have the right kelvin temp, and pick the right plants,that lowlight plants are easy to keep.A little Excel doesn't hurt either.
