Newts!!

What kind of newt? I kept firebellies for a while. They do best in a species only setup, since they are not aggressive feeders and may be picked on by the fish. They do need access to the surface, and a completely covered tank is necessary to prevent them from getting out. Depending on species, they may do better in warmer waters, and they can be messy, contributing significantly to the bio-load. Your 15 is already overstocked--I doubt this will help.

exactly first i would take the newt back or go back and buy him his own tank, second get rid of like half of the fish you have in your 30g your way overstocked on both of them

I just got a second hand ten gallon that I'm told used to house newts.
and it made me wonder if i should try to keep some.
are there many different sorts available? where do the pet stores get them? do the need 'land' to climb out onto? how long do they live, do they like to be alone or in groups....
I'll look around on line too, just thought I'd ask here.
and flagfish, not that you asked, but I really recommend finding out if there's "anything you should know" Before you bring home a new live thing, eh?

wow 59 Fish in a 30 Gallon. It must be a mess.
I also agree with the newts having their own tank, any fish that can eat them will.

This thread is making me very interested in now setting up a small tank of newts. Hmm.. its getting season again, I wonder if I can order some Eastern Newts.

I don't see any tank stats for Flagfish.
My fire belly newts spend allmost 100% of their time in the dry area (dry=saturated as apposed to open water.)
they eat small crickets and some dry food. They're fun to watch when they move. Problem is once thay settle in, they don't move much. Sit and wait predators. My substrate is 50% coconut bark mixed with 25% playsand, and 25% boiled partially decomposed leaves.

yesterday, I contacted my local petshop to see if they would order any Eastern newts, and for shame, they could not at this time. The distributor did not have any, next possibly. But Again its a season thing for those guys here. I am hoping soon though probably in the next few weeks. I am starting to see oregon newts.
I am thinking of doing a mixed tank with firebellies and easterns and see how that turns out. Adding a few guppies to the tank as well.
