Hi,

I got a new 10 gallon with my christmas money. its not up cycling yet. But will be soon. I wanted some ideas on how to stock it sp i will know how to set up the tank (Gravel, decorations, plants, etc) I really like Dwarf Gouramis (not sure if i spelled that right) So if he would fit in the tank ok, what else could i put in with him?

I was thinking a school of Zebra Danios, or some type of schooling fish. And maybe something for the bottom level. I know common plecos get HUGE! I had one several years ago i got when he was 2in and in a 45g he grew to 15". Luckily i found someone who wanted him.

Anywho, Any ideas?

Would Zebra Danios not be good for the tank? I have never had tetras before. I just have experience with Zebra Danios as schooling fish.

Size-wise they're fine, but I think they're so active that they'd find a 10g a bit small. I really like the suggestion of lemon tetras; when colored-up, they'd make a nice contrast to the dwarf gourami. Oh, and for him, be sure to give him some plants and a rock to hide behind, so he feels more secure. They're a bit on the shy side.

Zebra Danios will be too active for a 10 gallon, but a Dwarf Gourami would be a great centerpiece for the tank. I currently have a Dwarf Gourami and 2 Platies (soon to be 3) in a 10 gallon tank and it is working out great.

Before stocking with plants it would be better to decide which fish you intend to stock since some fish find plants to be very tasty. For lack of decision almost any artificial plants would do well. I would also suggest that you get "low/regular" light requirement type of plants.

For my 10, I use artificial plants so I don't have to worry about light/food requirements of them. I use a 4-way piece of plumbing pipe (plastic) as a place for fish to swim through or to hide in. I also use a 4inch clay pot.

For substrate I use medium size, rounded natural stone. For bottom dwellers I have Julie Cory cats as they are very active during the day and school very well.

I had planned on using plastic plants. I have never had live plants nor would i want to. I had a quick question. I have a male betta who is currently is a 2g. And i would like him to go into the 10g also if its possible. What would make good tank mates for him?

Put your Betta and 4-5 Pygmy Cories in the 10g
