I was trying to figure out why my nitrates are through the roof, tested my tap water and there are nitrates in the water.25ppm tobe exact, what should I do?These nitrate problems Im having are making me vexed, makes me want to collect seawater,my mates collect their own and they have never had problems like this.their tanks are sweeeeet.what should I do?help!:wall:

option #1: get a tap water conditioner like Amquel+ (which I believe removes compounds in the nitrogen cycle as well as chlorides)

option #2 (the better option): Get a RO/DI system to filter your water. Use the purified water instead of water from the tap

I couldn't agree more with using RO/DI water, whether that means you purchase the water, or an RO/DI system. I wouldn't collect seawater- you never know what kind of contaminants you may be putting into the tank.

Yeah, it's best to avoid using the tap water. NOt only nitrate, but it might contain silicate and phosphate as well... all of which can be avoided using Ro/Di water. Water conditioner will not remove any of these.

Also to note most water conditioners don't "remove" these items.. They bind them in such as way as to supposedly make them less harmful to aquaria.

:iagree:

Ditto on use of RO as well.:)
