I suspect the "acid buffer" is phosphoric acid.

I'd advise against using it.

Things are much better.

Well, I don't know if it was the live plants, a couple of 50% water changes, or just the extra few days. Nitrites are down to .5, and moving on down. Nitrates are up to 20 and Ammonia is still 0. I believe we're over the hump.
