Nitrite shocker...am I doing the right thing?

update

Angel is getting huge...gummy tetras are fine and so is the lone kuli loach...

Bad news cory died from the fizzy tab treatment just a few days after treatment was switched to salt...male guppy died 2 months ago... female is sideways about to die now and the female platy did the same routine about 2 weeks ago (also dead). No noted abnormaities in the female guppy , but the male guppy got contorted and hunchbacked before he died...The female guppy that is about to die is just laying a bit sideways and breathing...she swims when bumped with he net , but isn't eatting... \

The male platy is looking "slimmer" and while he DOES eat...I see him hanging on the bottom like the other fish have done.... The thing is, the angel and tetras seem fine... WHAT COULD AFFECT PLATTYS AND GUPPYS ALONE?
BTW:
The platy female was a bit clamped finned before she died, but the male doesn't seem to have the same appearence.

I have kept the PH a bit on the low side to ward off ammonium build up and so
The PH was 6.2 yesterday... I did a 30% water change and got it to 7.0-7.2 today and the Nitrites are zero and have been since the cycle finished months ago...

I haved a gazillion snails off some java moss I put in when the cycle was finishing (what to do with them all?)

and the java grass had to be chopped in half as it was everywhere! I tossed half out and the angel seemed to get "nicer" as there was a bit more room...

QUESTION:

What could be hurting the platty and guppies but not the angel and tetras? also is it cruel to get rid of the snails? There are tons and tons of them adn while the glass has never been cleaner, the tank is just peppered with them...they are soooooooo many!

Wow, just the angel alone and your tank was overstocked recomended 30 gallon for an angel since they get so large...

Sounds like some of your fish could have internal bacterial infections. Probably caused by amonia and Nitrite early in the cycle.

You could have tried bio spira to jump start the cycle.

I dunno...The cycle was started and this thread originally back on 2/28/06

the fish were all fine all spring...summer and most of the fall. Could a bacterial infection sustain for so long before infecting the fish now? Are the tons of snails stressing the fish and if so...why only certain ones?

Female guppy won't last long...I keep being surprised to see her still breathing
