I used to have a Red Sea nitrite test (which came in their Deluxe Fresh Lab kit) but recently finished it. I got an Aquarium Pharmaceuticals (Doc Wellfish) nitrite test the other day.

my question is, why does the Red Sea one register much lower concentrations of nitrite (the first reading is 0.05 ppm, next 0.1 ppm, etc.) while the API test goes from 0 to 0.25 with nothing in between? the instructions claim that the API test is up to 3.3 times more sensitive than other tests. what gives?

should i be worried, because my oto's used to start breathing heavily if nitrite registered as low as 0.1?

I think part of the reason is, is there should not be any Nitrite in a tank. It should always read 0. If it is above that then there is something going on. The 0.25 mark is when you need to start to really worry. I think they do it this way as opposed to putting all the different marks for the reason above.

 I'm just guessing here but it could be that API's test solution is 3.3 times more sensitive than others except RedSea!! Naturally the goal is 0.0 but if for some reason your bio crashes (Heaven forbid, knock on wood, fingers & toes crossed ect.) your 'otto' is going to react long before the 0.25ppm spike. RedSea evidently has a reagent that is a little more sensitive & accurate. For otto's sake thats a good thing cause it will save him the stress between 0.10 & 0.25 which could be significant!! Just a guess, hope it helps. Good Luck
