My hubby is getting me a new tank for Christmas and we've been looking around craiglist. Today I saw a post that says "... the filter is the kind that doesn't require any upkeep such as media or carbon..." No brand name is given. This seems odd to me. I would think all filters require cleaning of some sort. Anyone know what this guy is talking about?

The only type I know of are natural lakes and rivers. All filters need upkeep to continue running. If they don't service the filters they will get clogged and not really filter out anything, making them useless.

What size tank are yougetting? I've never heard of a maintenance free filter, but low maintenance is not too far from the truth. All of my tanks are over 100 gallons, so I use large canister types (i.e. Fluval FX5). This filter could probably go about a month before you have to rinse off the mechanical media due to stuff collecting on it. That's what it's supposed to do. Ocassionally I rinse the bio bedia with some R/O water. I only keep cermic media in my filters. No chemical filtration. Good luck on your new setup!

Hmmmm....I think the giveaway is the claim that it doesn't need media. Basically all filters, by definition, need a medium or combination of same through which the water is filtered. Otherwise they're just powerheads. Sounds a bit fishy.

(pause to allow people stop laughing uncontrollably ^)

As said already, you'll need to do maintenance on any filter about once a month - but especially with a self-priming cannister its very straightforward.

They may be talking a UGF...and if so, they tell lies...

^ very true.

Hmmmm....seemed to recover remarkably quickly from that killer line rb btw.

That's what I was thinking. At the very least you have to rinse the media off occasionally and if you have no media then it's just a pump. It's a 20 gallon. I have a 37 gallon with a canister and I HAVE gone a month without cleaning it. I also just just floss and ceramic rings. I don't think that's the case here. I sent him an email. I'll see what info I get from him.
