nocturnal viewing

Have you tried a red light? Like one of the red map flashlights sold at Army surplus stores? I heard that most noturnals don't notice them and aren't spooked by them, but I have never tried so it might be hooey.

would moonlighting work?

Yes moonlights would work just fine-Anne

they also have these cover things that slide over the bulb in the fish hood that colors the light red. Or if you can get some of that clear see-through red paper and just place it under the light part over the tank. Using red lighting is outstanding for SW tanks, I wonder what one would see in the FW underworld...

Truely noctural fish are somewhat inhibited by "moonlight" if there is a lot of white or blue light in the tank. Red light is much better, but it must really be red - thin films will not do the job. Photo safelights work fine.

My own experiences echo RTR's comments. The fishes that I've kept that avoided sunlight and white light would also steer clear of blue LEDS and bulbs covered by the red tubes.

The red tube was a neat look for a tank where the fish doesn't mind at night, though.

Do malaysian trumpet snails respond to moonlight? I'm interested in getting a moonlight too...
