I too do not like noises comming from my tanks. In my experience any filter that has a bio-wheel is noisy.
Hang on back filters in general have a tendancy to hum especially when old worn and dirty even if they were quite when new. Most of the HOB filters also give off the sound of running water if they have a bio-wheel, or if you have water loss due to evaporation.
Air powered sponge filters and undergravel filters make bubbling noises as the air bubbles break the surface of the water.
Overflow fed sump filters make a variety of gurgling and bubbling noises however this can be greatly reduced with careful plumbing.
The quietest filters I have used were normal or reverse flow power head driven undergravel filters, and small internal hang inside tank power filters.
I have never used canister filters, but have heard from a large number of others that they are also extremely quiet.
I have 2 tanks in the livingroom and both run Aquaclear filters. They are very quiet filters and I never have trouble when I clean them and start them up again. I bought mine at Petsmart and took the ad off of the petsmart.com website and the price was only 19.99. I also like the filter media better in an aquaclear than in a whisper. They keep both my tanks clean and clear.
