Noisy penguin 100

I run a Whisper on my 5.5g. It works wonderfully. Never owned an Aquaclear personally, but so many people on here swear by them that I figure they must be as good as any.

I have never heard of the aquaclears running out onto the floor. I have them running on three of my tanks and have not encountered this problem to date.

could be air bubbles still trapped in the impeller housing. are you using it for the 10G tank? i had a noisy penguin biowheel 100 for my 10G a while back. turns out the intake tube was too long (it was actually touching the bottom) and since it was touching the bottom, it kept pushing the whole intake tube upwards therefore somewhat severing the impellers magnet connection with the motor which caused the loud racket.

Thanks for all the info...

It's for a 10g (my 25g has an old aquaclear 200 that is silent and runs ok for now, but I wish it had a little more power, not much water agitation from that one).

Can you measure your whisper 20 and tell me th width? I can fit a 6" filter, any wider and I would have to cut the hood a little.

Where would I find a Whisper in Montreal area? Normally I always go to Big Al's because it's been recommended to me, but I don't know any other aquarium only store in my area (only petshops....)

I want to return the Penguin tomorrow morning, and I will have to find another filter right away because I don't have any spare one.

When in proper condition, no HOB filter should empty to a point to where it can't start back up again after a power failure. I often unplug all of mine while doing maintenance and when I plug them back in; they come right back to life.

With HOBs it will sometimes require some noisy "sucking" time to get back up to speed but it will always be functioning again within a minute or so. Otherwise it's malfunctioning. The only time it might not be able to start back up is if the water level in the tank is really low.

Sounds like the water level in the tank is too low for a proper restart? It also doesn't sound like they removed the full impeller assembly from the filter and re-install it. My bio wheel 100 did the same thing a couple of times when new - noise - wise.

If they aren't willing to properly trouble shoot the filter, they'll just end up getting another one and have the same issue or that will develope the same issue later on, and then back to square one.

I have removed the impeller and tried to re-seat it properly. I think I'm going to try the old impeller from my aqua-tech 5-15 that just died, they look exactly the same size.

I don't know if it's my imagination, but I think that it's just quieter this evening. It's been running for 5 days now, could it be that it's getting better with time?

Without being able to physically examine the filter and hear the sound myself I can't say if it's defective or maybe just needs some break-in time. It could also be that you are expecting a more quiet overall operation than this model will give. (Though aside from the splish-splash of the biowheel, I hear nothing from my 100.)

Honestly I think I would suggest, if the noise is continuing to be bothersome, just exchanging it for a new unit. If after a few days the new unit is just as annoying to you, then switch to a different product.

I personally find the Penguin filters to be wonderful. My 125 has been running for almost five years on my 20g tank and hasn't given me much trouble at all. I run a 150 as an add-on to my 55g and that has been extremely reliable. A 100 on my ten gallon tank hasn't skipped a beat since it started. And an Emperor 400 keeps my mbuna in very good shape.

I also have had a good experience thus far with the Whisper, but that's only been a couple of months thus far. My only Aquaclear experience was the defective one, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't have been a great filter had a replaced it wit another Aquaclear.

I'd return it and get an Aqua Clear. Skip all others, they freeze up when under 74 degrees. :joke:
