Non-Aggressive Chichlids?

If you don't want just cichlids it is going to be tough to balance a community tank with a lot of cichlids. What fish other than cichlids were you considering? When you say you want a lot of cichlids how many are you thinking? For a 75g you could do a nice mbuna tank with several species and then have some synodontis catfish. They're definitely not peaceful, but they are very colorful and entertaining.

Well there is a difference between aggressive and territorial. A kenyi will defend his little rock like crazy, but doesn't usually go for the kill. Same with convicts and peacocks, I don't think I've ever seem them go after another fish just for the heck of it. Rusties will nip all day but also don't get mean about it. Once they get big oscars, jack dempsey, green terrors, red devils, will end up getting truly aggro and it always seems to lead to a tank with one big fish you can't add more fish to. But if anything a lot of varieties seems to work out better, especially with top swimmers, midswimmers, and africans in the rocks. If you have just a couple varieties or just a couple fish they have nothing else to do but tear each other apart, and even if they are not serious about it that's what wille ventually happen.

Well, I can tell you that in my current community tank the sole angel is definitely the most evil of the bunch, though he's not fast enough to do any real damage. The spotted climbing perch on the other hand is calm, cool and methodical... and has a much larger mouth. He has been whittling away on my neon tetra population for several weeks now. It's to the point I'm trying to decide if I should just let the rest be food or try and save the stragglers and put them in their own tank. Of course he leaves them alone all day (unlike the angel, which goes after anything and everything on a whim at any given time) and sucks them up spaghetti style at night...

My Frontosia is a very timid mellow fish and I believe they have a reputation for being this way.

I have a wide variety of African cichlids (7) and have not had any aggression problems in my 110 gallon. I do not have any 2 of the same species. I have no females. My fish range form 1.5" to 6". I have lots of caves and hiding places.

Maybe I am just lucky?

wait, angelfish are cichlids?? I did not know this. However I can testify that many...well, ok, some...angelfish can be mean nasty bossy aggressive harrass-the-heck-out-of-anybody-around SOBs. And eat anything they can catch, and can catch about anything on account of being wicked fast for something their size and shape.

just sayin'. I love angels but some individuals can be so bad you can't keep them with anything else. Trust them like you would a rattlesnake.

ugh...ummmmmm..yyyeeeaaa I have 7 angelfish and they are the LEAST aggressive fish that I own. I have a danio that's more of a bully than my angelfish. They squabble with eachother once in a while but I have never seen them pick on any other fish....whoever told you that can you please forward thier number to me because I need to get some of whatever they're smoking. I have my 3" angels in with tiny pygmy cories and they don't bother with them at all, nevermind think of them as food.

Angelfish are super-aggressive when spawning, they are fierce parents. I've seen some wild Angelfish that were aggressive, other than that IME "angel" fish live up to thier name.

While I agree it is highly variable...I have to disagree with some of those on the list.
I also agree that cichlids are cichlids...they are mean to each other...question is how much damage do they actually do.

Apistos...I have a apir that killed every other fish in the tank....
Angelfish....maybe fine if your lucky....if not can be extremely aggressive...just search this forum you will find many instances of agressive angelfish.

Chocolate cichlids are known for their nice personality. They also get big and very pretty.

I agree on the Apistos but it depends on the individual fish, I think on the species too, I have a huge male fire red agassizi and he keeps to himself, he makes a perfect community fish but my LFS has Viejitas that they can't keep other fish with because they will get killed.

In a 75 you could do angels, festivums(very peaceful), geophagus, bolivian rams, electric blue jack dempseys, chocolates(get really big), kribs.....I have all of the above except for the chocolates in my 75 (the kribs and the bolivian are in my 30 gallon) and they all get along fine for the most part.

Even "peaceful" cichlids are cichlids and can be aggressive. It highly depends on the individuals and the stock that is kept with them.

"Peaceful" cichlids:
Rams
Apistos
Kribs
Keyholes
Curviceps
Rainbow cichlids
Firemouths (for the most part)
Angelfish

really? not at all, my firemouth is with a jack dempsey, jaguar, green terror, bleekeri, two jewels, a texas, and a salvini, and he runs the tank. most firemouths ive ever seen (especially if their with no angressive fish) are very nasty

^I agree, mine is only an inch long and he's a jerk, thinking about returning him, he harrasses my 3" wavrini relentlessly. Firemouths should not be classified as peaceful lol.
