Noob needs help with substrate

It depends on the fish! It's like matching cloths lol.

Personally, as long as they are not fish that NEED hiding spaces, I wouldn't get substrate, but if this is your first tank I would just get some normal black gravel.

Plants can be grown in just the normal gravel that comes in any color you want?

For the tank I am looking at housing a betta and a oto or 2. So I am trying get whatever would be best.

I've been growing plants in normal gravel, and they seem to be doing pretty well. I'm going to experiment with playsand in a 10 and see if I get any difference. I do end up using root tabs for my heavy root feeders though. To a certain extent it depends on what you want to grow. Amazon fern, and most plants that can be floated really won't worry too much about your substrate. Things like Amazon sword, sag, etc. that are really root feeders will probably do better with one of the plant substrates.

All my tanks (5 -- 3-gallon, 5-gallon, 10-gallon, 12-gallon and 29-gallon) have Ecocomplete substrates. I believe Eco comes in 20-lb bags. I know I used half a bag in my 5-gallon and a full bag in my 10-gallon. I used about a 1/3 bag in my 3-gallon and the remainder of that bag and a full bag in my 12-gallon. In my 29-gallon, I used either 3 or (maybe) 4 bags. You will be just fine with one bag in a 10-gallon.
