Hello I am going to set up a 20 high as a biotope for Microgeophagus Ramirezi. I have a R/O unit I plan on using to get the water a little better than our native Cumberland River water. I am looking for advice on this project, most notably: a suitable light, plants, substrate and quality breeder of the German Blues. The tank is not set up yet so I am flexible, I was wondering if a 30 high would be better but it looks like a larger footprint is more important. I also have a 70 gallon (not set up yet) but thought it might be best to start of on a smaller scale. Thanks - trhaight

Thanks I appreciate it, would it be more appropriate post this question on the fresh water tank thread rather than the newbie's?

You should have a test kit to measure GH ,KH, and PH levels. You can mix tap water with the RO and aim for a KH reading of 4-9 and a fairly soft GH level , say 100 ppm or so.

I would err on the side of caution and not try to get the water softer than that as you can run into problems with PH swings.

Thanks - can I just add commercial de chlor

Reconstituting RO water is about restoring some of the general hardness (GH) to the water not the declorination.
