Noob to Plants

the Kelvin rating is just as, if not more, important than the wattage. if a blub is a super high kelvin rating, such as 10,000 K or 12,000 K or even 14,000 K, the plants are going to get little use out of the light and algae growth will explode. the plants will grow, but not like they would with something like a 6700 K bulb.

consider common ludwigia for your background plant. its effortless to take care of.

ok. i like the info but it is still to technical for me. i dont understand all this 6000k or 10000k stuff. i understand the wpg though.

just remember the # and you will find it on the packaging.

wycco, how did you go about rewiring your hood for 3 cf's? i;m interested in doing this over my 29g.

Well this is the thread that inspired me:
http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147012

Basically:

I took out the flourescent fixture already in place (unscrewed it).
Spray painted the top white with high-heat rustoleum.
Screwed three light sockets into the top through the holes for the vents.
Attached black wires to black wires with wire ties, and white wires to white wires.

Voila done. Sounds simple... it is simple- just make sure you don't leave wires uncovered- have everything tight and secure... etc... The thread will go into more detail and lots of people have done this and give their accounts of how they did it there- gives much more detailed instructions there.
