Nook and ePUB

I was looking into getting a Nook and I heard through the grape vine that it is possible to rent books and not have to buy them, a virtual library of sorts, that it if it is not returned in time you can be hit with fines and such. I tried to do some googling, but my google fu is lacking, and I don't quite understand the technical jargon that comes up.

Any one have a Nook and has used this service?

Actually, I believe you can use a Nook to read electronic versions of books from traditional libraries. (I do this with a Sony Reader and so can't confirm that you can do this with a Nook, but I believe it can be done with all e-book devices other than Kindles.) Of course, there is the question of whether the public libraries near you have a decent selection. You might go online to figure this out.

Yes, there is a rental for e-readers. Your local library can "lend" books for free as well. you will need to read B&N's web site for requirements.

Same applies to the Kindle with the supporting web site being Amazon.com.

I've done some reading and found that the key difference between the nook and kindle is that the nook can get ePub directly while it would have to go through a converter for the kindle. They seem to be nearly identical otherwise.
