Normal bookshelf hold a 10gal tank?

Says on the product description that each shelf holds 55lb (half the weight of a 10g), plus one of the reviewers noted that the supports are plastic not metal and don't feel weighty/strong at all. The one from Petco is probably constructed of different materials, etc. FYI, I've seen simple metal 10g stands at Petco for $20-30 bucks.

Sadly, I've seen reviews and seen the "cheap" $20-30 ones and they are very unsteady. Sways and almost feel like it'll topple over. I'm thinking of getting this one but this one lacks any shelves but the price is acceptable.

Most shelving units will tell you how many lbs per shelf it will hold. I have a black powder coated metal shelving unit in my office, it holds a 20 gallon on each shelf and two tens on the bottom shelf. The box said it would hold 1500lbs per shelf, so I'm gtg. It's 48"x18"x72" high, and does have adjustable shelving. I bought it as Costco for 59$. If you have the room, maybe this would suit you?

"Each shelf holds 55 lbs"

Don't even think about it. You know how much a cup of water looks when you spill it all over the floor? Try 10 gallons. Or rather don't.

That metal shelving looks to be a good choice. I would much prefer a natural wood look but if these metal shelving works well, then its definitely worth consideration.
So metal shelving or wood stand with no shelves at all. Both similarly priced... hmm... Any taller similar ones as the metal shelving ones? Would be nice if i can get it to at least 3 feet off the ground.

Thanks again everyone!

I have a larger version of the Manhattan stand for my 29 gallon, and I'm using the metal shelves as temporary shelving for a couple of hospital/quarantine 10 gallon tanks. The Manhattan stand looks nice, but if you don't have a place to store your fish stuff nearby, it could be more trouble than it's worth. The stand is black steel, not wood, so if you're looking for a natural wood stand it is definitely not what you want. Have you seen this one? http://www.petco.com/product/109067...on-Tank-Stand-with-Shelf.aspx#description-tab
It's large enough for a 20 gallon, but it's just a few dollars more than the Manhattan. Another option would be to check out goodwill/salvation army/savers for inexpensive solid wood furniture.

The description says "55 pounds per shelf". 10 Gal tank = 110 pounds. The math does not work out. I think this stand uses thin PVC type pipes as supports. the weight is distributed over a small surface area on the ends of these "pipes". I think it would be a disaster. However, I believe there are better bookshelves out there that would support. Look for the ones that have a back. Even a very thin back will keep the unit squared up so that all the force is applied straight down on the legs. If it wobbles sideways, the legs could fail.
