normal oranda behavior?

Hey guys quick question here. I recently bought a medium oranda goldfish (5') . He is in a 25 gallon tank my himself. (i plan to get him a tank mate soon). Its a new tank, i did the fishless cycle and have had him about 3 weeks. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, nitrate 15, PH 7.2. Ive been reading as much as i can about fish as i am fairly new to this hobby. Is it normal for an oranda to sit on the bottom of the tank half the time? He is active the other half, swimming, sucking gravel etc. But the other half (not including at night) he just sits there. I have read it could be flukes or swim badder. I dont think its swim bladder because he has no trouble swimming. Would you guys medicate for flukes or is this normal? :huh:

My fancy goldfish did that too but it lived for some time after (even though I was so stupid at that time and kept 3 goldfish in a 10 gallon). I think it would be okay if your oranda was active and happy the other half of the time. I would think it might be something to do with the swim bladder. Does it swim funny or upside-down sometimes?

Thanks for the response winterwind. As far as swimming goes it looks normal to me. No upside down stuff or anything. I fed him some frozen peas for 2 days and fasted him for 2 just in case but he still sat there half the time so i got worried and found this website and thought i would ask. Good looking betta by the way.

should I let my lying fish lie?

I recently bought two goldfish and put them in a ten gallon tank. For the first week they were swimming all the time but now they just lie at the bottom together unless they're eating or swimming around a bit. Is this normal?

for the first person, yes, i would say that just "hanging out" for half the time is normal. my moor swims and eats about half the time and hovers in the very center of the tank the rest of the time.

for the second person - do you have any other fish in the 10g? how long has it been set up? did you put in water and then throw the fish in there? ammonia/nitrite/nitrate readings? do you do water changes?
