I live in Wilmington, only about 20 minutes away from Fort Fisher. I have been to the aquarium a few times and am very pleased with the renovations they have done.
Interesting tid bit: lionfish, in no way endemic to NC, are now well established just offshore, and may pose a threat to other native species. The newly founded lionfish population is believed to have been introduced by the release of several "pet" lionfish. It is uncertain if the fish were intentionally dumped in our waters, or if they were accidentally released as a result of hurricane damage to homes near the waterway that contained aquariums. Either way, it appears they are here to stay. Just one of the possible damages that can come from irresponsible reef keeping.
